Kunsthaus Graz

In truth the sole initial motivation for visiting Graz was to see the city’s modern Art House, or Kunsthaus. Years ago a saw a picture of the blue blob-like structure nestled in among the red tile roofs of the city; I knew it was something I had to see. The Kunsthaus looked perfectly out of place. For the past few years we’ve had tentative plans to try to get to Graz, but they never worked out. Finally this year we made it. (more…)

San Francisco: Street Art

“In Memory of Pico Sanchez”, Mel C. Waters, Clarion Alley, 2010

Pretty much every major metropolitan city has street art. San Francisco is no exception. Like many upscale cities San Francisco’s street art tends to be confined to particular areas. Exuberant art does not spill out in all sorts of unexpected places like it does in rougher cities like Valparaiso Chile. (more…)

Spain: Madrid, Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza

“My Young Friend” (Andrew Wyeth)

Madrid is known for its art museums; they rank as some of the very best in the world. When we visited Madrid in November of 2017 we visited the Museo del Prado and the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza. As much as we would have liked, we never managed to fit Madrid’s third major art museum, Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, into our schedule, even after we extended our stay to nine nights. We will have to see the Reina Sofia on a return visit to Madrid. (more…)

Wander the streets of Lyon long enough and you are sure to encounter street art. The city is large, youthful, and vibrant enough to allow street artist culture thrive. There are many interesting things to see in places like Croix-Rousse. It is possible to find some pointers online but otherwise the art is waiting to be discovered by passersby who explore the city on foot. (more…)

San Francisco: San Francisco’s Museum of Modern Art

“Furrow” by Carl Andre

I must admit having an affinity for modern art museums like San Francisco’s Museum of Modern Art. Sure, I only really like about 10% or so of the pieces of art on display. In most modern art museums I don’t “get” many of the pieces. But for me that is part of the appeal. When I look at many pieces on display the nagging question that often comes to mind: “Is that art?” It’s a question that leads me down the deep rabbit hole of the eternal debate about what defines art.
