Czech Republic: Brno, Tugenhaut Villa

Tugendhat Villa

The next leg of our September/October 2018 road trip took us from Telč in the Czech Republic to Bratislava Slovakia. Google told us that the drive would take us about two and a half hours. There was some extra time for sightseeing and soon we rerouted to see the two UNESCO World Heritage sites along the way that we hadn’t visited. This habit of trying to visit all possible places inscribed UNESCO’s list has led us to see over 140 World Heritage sites so far. In the process we’ve learned much about history and culture. Czech Republic: Telč, Plague Column

Telč’s Plague Column

In Český Krumlov the walking tour guide explained the purpose of the ornate pillar in the town’s central square. It was, the tour group was told, built to commemorate the end of the Plague. So now we knew. It is surprising that after years of European travel we only recently learned the purpose of these pillars. After Krumlov we were sure to look out for more Plague Columns as we traveled further. (more…)

Czech Republic: Telč

Renaissance and Baroque houses line the sides of Telč’s main square.

As we readied to leave Český Krumlov’s tourist throngs behind we went downstairs to load the luggage into the car. We were greeted by two police officers preparing to attach a boot to the wheel of our rental car. The car had been parked in a remote garage and had just been moved to the front of the hotel by the staff. We knew the entrance to our part of the hotel was in a pedestrian zone. But the hotel desk staff was insistent on moving the rental car to the front of the building rather than allowing us to shuttle our luggage through the cobbled streets to the garage as we did on the way in. Czech Republic: Třebíč, Jewish Quarter and St Procopius’ Basilica

Třebíč, St Procopius’ Basilica

It was rainy, chilly, and brisk when we arrived in Třebíč. The climatic conditions added to the somber mood of the visit.

Czech Republic: Český Krumlov

Český Krumlov with its castle in the background

I posit Český Krumlov is one of those places that are commonly “unknown” except by travelers who completely know about them. If you ask a random person to name places in the Czech Republic they are likely to say Prague. And Prague is the most popular destination in the Czech Republic by the numbers. But if you ask a traveler there’s a good chance that Český Krumlov will come up as a want-to-see destination. It is one of the Czech Republic’s top attractions, and for good reason. (more…)

Czech Republic: Holašovice Historic Village

Holašovice Historic Village

Holašovice is a small rural historic Bohemian village located in southern Czech Republic. The village is within 50 miles of both the Austrian and German borders. In late September 2018 on our way by car from Salzburg Austria to another popular tourist destination Český Krumlov we made a 30-minute detour to see Holašovice. (more…)

Austria: Hellbrun Palace

Hellbrunn Palace

Hellbrunn Palace (German: Schloss Hellbrunn) is an early Baroque villa to the south of Salzburg Austria. It was built in 1613–19 and named for the clear spring that supplied its water features. The palace is famous for its jeux d’eau or water games that are spread throughout the estate’s grounds. Indeed it is the playful water features that make Hellbrun a popular tourist attraction in the summer months. (more…)

Austria: Salzburg

Inside Salzburg’s cathedral

Salzburg Austria has it all. It’s scenic and historic. UNESCO agrees: The “Historic Centre of the City of Salzburg” has been inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage list. If there were a modern-day Grand Tour route, Salzburg would clearly be on it and for good reason. (more…)

The trail winds up the side of the mountain to the entrance of the Eisriesenwelt cave.

Roughly forty minutes by car from Salzburg Austria is Eisriesenwelt, the world’s longest ice cave. A two-kilometer portion of the 42-kilometer-long cavern is open to the public for guided tours from May until the end of October. In late September of 2018 Becky and I detoured on our way from Munich to Salzburg to check it out. (more…)

Inside the Bräurosl tent, which serves Hacker-Pschorr beer.

I’ve long wanted to attend Oktoberfest but could never arrange the time. Finally in 2018 there was an opportunity. A visit to Munich during Oktoberfest both fit into our travel schedule and we started looking early enough to be able to find a hotel room for two humans and one canine for three nights during the festival.
