We loaded up and headed down to Bend for a fine German breakfast at Han’s on Wall Street in the historic downtown section. At Han’s we scoped out some of the bike shops in Bend on Becky’s Crackberry and headed down after breakfast to Hutch Bike Shop on 3rd Street for some trail information. We received enough trail information to keep us in the saddle for a week and purchased a detailed trail map.

One of the places highlighted by the folks at Hutch was the “Phil’s Trails” area. Phil’s Trails is a local favorite with miles and miles of singletrack options. We decided to head over there (it is just out of town) and take the suggestion that condensed down to “Go there and wander. With a map you can’t get lost.” Besides, all of the trail junctions are numbered and correspond to the map so all you have to do to describe a ride is to connect the “dots” of the trail junction numbers.

Stats: 14 miles, 1.9 hrs ride time

Brian and I were somewhat trashed from the forays into the wilds the previous two days so we decided to head out for an easier, hour long spin. With this in mind, we chose to ride the Deschutes River Trail (DRT).

Mt. St. Helens

Filed under: OR WA 2007, Other, Travel — anotherheader @ 10:10 pm

The Crew: Brian, Dave, and Nick

We awoke thinking that we do an easier ride in the area and then a longer ride the following day that included Plains of Abraham and Ape Canyon Trails. We thought we do a little exploration of the area by truck, before we rode. We decided to drive around and get a good view of Mt. St. Helens. We went quite a ways while getting only fleeting glimpses of the mountain through the trees until we finally reached a point were we had a good view of the mountain. At this point, we were pretty close to the volcano overlooks so we decided to continue on and take a look. The sights were amazing. It is hard to fathom how much material was expelled in the blast until you see it in person. Signs of the massive destruction are evident miles from (more…)

BC OR WA MTB Trip Summary 2007

Aren't we home yet?

Aren't we home yet?

Personally, I found this year’s trip, amongst all the bike trips I have done recently, to be particularly enjoyable. Part of this, I’m sure, was the pace. It was a longer trip with more break days. Another part was certainly the terrain, with Mount St. Helens, Squamish, Mt. Seymour, and Mt. Fromme all proving to be worth many days of further exploration. Then again, there was the company.

The biggest downsides were the traffic in Seattle (stuck behind a tanker spill) and the 2 hrs, forty fucking minutes it took me Nick and myself to get back into the US at (more…)
