Boats moored in Le Palais on Belle-Île-en-Mer

Le Palais is one of the four communes on Belle Île, a 32 square mile island in the Bay of Biscay off the south coast of Brittany. This picturesque village of 2,500 people is centered on a small sheltered fishing port overlooked by the massive Citadelle de Belle-Île-en-Mer designed by the famous French military architect Vauban. Le Palais’ citadelle was considered for inscription as part of UNESCO’s “Fortifications of Vauban” UNESCO World Heritage listing but was left off the final list.

Today the citadelle is a hotel-museum. Indeed, when we learned it was possible to stay inside the walls of Vauban’s fort it cemented our decision to visit Belle Île. It was hard to pass on the opportunity to spend a night inside such an historical structure.

We visited Le Palais in August of 2018. The rental car was left behind in Quiberon as we took the ferry to Belle-Île-en-Mer.
