Staring down the barrel

On the outskirts of Saumur France is a large tank museum, the Musée des Blindés or in English the “Museum of Armored Vehicles”. Begun in 1977 it is now one of the world’s largest tank museums holding the world’s largest collection of armored fighting vehicles. It contains well over 880 vehicles.

The museum holds a key policy to restore to running condition as many historically or technically significant vehicles as is feasible. Over 200 of Musée des Blindés’ vehicles are fully functional, including the only surviving German Tiger II tank still in working order. Unfortunately they don’t let visitors take the Tiger II or the other examples of working armor out for a spin. That would have made for an even more interesting visit.

We visited the Musée des Blindés in August of 2018.
