Staying at the base of Montmarte it was abundantly apparent that we were in the midst of prime Parisian tourist territory. Each day crowds of visitors climb the hill to inspect Sacré-Cœur Basilica and gaze upon the panoramic view of Paris from the terrace. We understand the motivation; a few years ago we too were part of the Montmarte tourist invasion ourselves.
For us the daytime crowds were a minor inconvenience. We’d leave the vicinity to see other things in Paris. By the time we returned at night the doors to the tee shirt and souvenir shops were rolled down and the crowd had thinned. Strip away the tourists and area around Montmarte is a most pleasant neighborhood.
