Rome-Sicily October 2008

We are on our way to Italy for a two week visit that will feature Rome and Sicily. Over the next two weeks, our schedule looks something like this:

We arrive in Rome and stay 6 nights with day trips to the countryside. Departing Rome, we pick up a car and head to see the cave dwellings in Matera, which is located near the arch of the heel of Italy’s boot in Basilicata region of Italy. After 2 nights in Matera, we drive to Sicily (with a short ferry ride) and spend the night in Taormina. The next morning, we explore Taormina and then head up to Mt. Etna where will spend the night and explore the volcano the next day. Finishing with the tour of Etna, we head south to Syracuse, where we spend a night. From Syracuse, we make the short drive to Ragusa where will stay the evening and enjoy a fine meal at Ristoriante Duomo. Leaving Ragusa, we head to Agrigento for short stop to see the ancient Greek ruins and then it is on to Palermo where will drop the car off and enjoy the city on foot for a day or two before we return to the San Francisco Bay Area.

There’s a lot to do in a short time. Perhaps decaffeinated coffee would have been useful during the trip planning!
