Mount Saint Helens: The Climb
Periodically the notion of climbing a mountain sparks through our synapses. Usually good sense prevails. The painful pounding reality of the effort required to reach the top of some remote mountain quickly tempers the overactive enthusiasm. This time we made an exception. Mt. St. Helens was just too interesting not to climb.

Sometimes the places we visit are a revelation. And so it was with Montpellier France . Situated not far from the Mediterranean, Montpellier is surprisingly pleasant. It is better than advertised by the guidebooks.

Canal des Deux Mers: Capestang to Le Somail

At Capestang we were in the midst of Canal du Midi’s longest pound. From the top of the Fonseranne lock staircase just outside of Beziers, there are no locks on the canal for 54 kilometers.
